The report “Progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals in the Arab Region,” issued by ESCWA (one of five regional commissions under the mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Council) in March 2023, highlights the challenges facing the region in achieving the 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The report notes that the Arab region faces many challenges, including conflict, unrest, climate change, and lack of data.
According to the report, the region has made progress in achieving some of the sustainable development goals, such as reducing poverty and improving maternal and child health. However, it faces many challenges, including conflicts and tensions that have displaced millions of people and caused severe damage to infrastructure.
The report also included that among the most important challenges facing the region was the Covid-19 pandemic, which exacerbated poverty and unemployment, and increased pressure on health systems.
He pointed out that the Arab region faces major risks, most notably climate change, including drought, floods and sea level rise.
Arab countries also lack the data necessary to monitor progress in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.
The report provides several recommendations to improve progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals in the Arab region, including resolving unrest peacefully in order to rebuild infrastructure and improve people’s lives.
In addition to solving the problem of lack of investment in sustainable development, such as investing in areas such as education, health and renewable energy in order to achieve sustainable development goals.
He believes it is important to enhance international cooperation in order to address global challenges such as climate change.
In the report, you can find more detailed information about the progress made towards achieving the thirteenth goal on climate action at the Arab level, the extent to which per capita carbon dioxide emissions have declined, indicators on national and local strategies to reduce disaster risks, and figures on the amount of financing needed for climate action in Arab countries.
The United Nations Arab Region Sustainable Development Report 2023 notes that the region faces many challenges, but it also indicates that there is potential for progress.
